Project Name: North/South Point Douglas Organized Sports Survey 2009
for Norquay Community Centre/City of Winnipeg
Client: City of Winnipeg, Community Services Dept.
Timeline of Project: Dec 4/09 to Jan 15/10
Project Description:
  • Door-to-door survey of residents of North and South Point Douglas, Winnipeg, Manitoba on the topic of Organized Sports. Target population was households with children and youth 17 years and under. It was estimated that there were approximately 250 households with children. However, each house in the community had to be canvassed to ensure that all houses with children were contacted.

  • Survey Objective:  To build on the information gathered for the Norquay Community Centre in the 2008 community survey, focusing specifically on the topic of organized sports; the level of interest, current participation, barriers to participation, and the level of interest/participation if barriers were removed.

  • Special Challenges:  Due to delays on the client end, the survey was begun several weeks later than expected. The survey results were needed for the purposes of planning for spring recreation programs, so the survey had to be done during this winter period. Interviewers had to canvass the entire community in a limited time frame, working in extreme cold, and working after dark. In spite of these challenges, the survey was completed on time and on budget, with the process and results exceeding the client's expectations.

  • In addition to gathering input on organized sports, the survey provided the Norquay Community Centre with the following information:

o   Contact information for households with children

    o   A list of 65 willing volunteers

o   feedback on additional programs and activities desired

Theme Area: Recreation for children 17 years and under
Geographic Scope: Winnipeg inner-city communities of North and South Point Douglas
Service Area(s): Community Survey Research:   In-person, door-to-door Interviews producing qualitative and quantitative data
